Kent Preceptory of St George
Hail to the Chief!
It was a very unusual Installation meeting at the Kent Preceptory of St George on 15th December, when E.Kt. Bill Unger was Installed as Eminent Preceptor. Bill hails from the United States.
Yank takes control of St George!
William Grant Unger was born in 1939, in the town of Berwick, Pennsylvania. Although Pennsylvania is the Cranberry State, Berwick is most famous for its production of steel, potato chips, and, of course, Bill.
Bill moved to England, and South London in particular, in 1964, where he has lived ever since. He is well known locally for his involvement in a number of Masonic Orders, including Trismegistus Craft Lodge, Robert Loyd Red Cross of Constantine, and of course, St George KT.
Bill was expertly Installed by E.Kt. Terry Tanner, but what made the meeting extra special was St George’s unique celebration which followed. The Festive Board is really a Christmas Party, a full Christmas Turkey Dinner, with party poppers, explosive glitter, noisy balloons, party hats, crackers and the 11 piece Kent Messenger Brass Band to finish off, with everyone joining in with some well known carols.
The generosity of St George’s Preceptory was evinced by a generous donation to the St John’s Eye Hospital Anabta Appeal, and also by the Brass Band taking away with them a further sum for local Hospices. All the visitors went away with custom produced Christmas Cards, containing the St George Christmas Carol CD, a souvenir engraved pen. And V.E.Kt. Noel Grout even took away an engraved calculator. (I must reiterate the reminder to Noel, that when the band played “The First Noel”, it was not just in his honour!)
All in all, a superb occasion, which all will remember for years to come, and which makes St George’s one of the most popular and successful Preceptories in the Province.
